GLASS HOUSE EXTENSION LINKS HOME TO GARDEN

Spacious wintergarden for garden views all year

This Stoke Mandeville property has a lovely garden in an unusually large plot, but originally no direct connection from the living area to the outdoors; the layout of the house meant the garden was not visible from the lounge. Our clients wanted to connect the house and garden but not compromise on the levels of light inside. They also wanted their home to have a more individual and interesting appearance.

Our design solution was a wintergarden, or side return extension, to fit into the dead space of the side return. The lounge now extends to the back of the house so that in the summer the doors can be fully open to flow into the garden and in the winter the clients can sit protected from the elements and enjoy the low sun, the rain and even the snow! The bifold doors and roof of the wintergarden are higher than a standard modern room, which adds to the feeling of space and the half-glazed side elevation separates the property from the neighbours, while retaining a light airy feel.
